Cousin chips in with Kate tributes

The new Duchess of Cambridge's second cousin has been hard at work behind the counter at his award-winning chip shop.

It was business as usual for Peter Beedle, who served up royal wedding-themed fish and chips to a queue of customers at his shop in County Durham.

The father of two, who learned he was distantly related to Kate last year, watched the wedding on TV.

Mr Beedle, 47, who owns Beedle's Chippy in Oaklea Terrace, Bishop Auckland, said: "I had the telly on as I was frying up and I think Kate looked absolutely lovely.

"It's a proud moment for our family, for Bishop Auckland and the North East to have that royal connection. It's been fantastic for the business, we've had press from America, Australia, Germany, radio stations from radio across the world.

"I get a bit of banter, the kids ask me for autographs and a few of the lads in the pub take the mick a bit, but it's all in good fun.

"I'm spending the day at work, we've got the bunting and balloons out, we've got chocolates on the side and we hope the customers will come and have their Great British fish and chips after the royal wedding," he said. "We've got Middleton's Mushy peas, Kate's Cod, Buck House Burgers. I drew the line at getting some skate in."

Mr Beedle learned he was related to Kate four years ago when a national newspaper approached his mother Shirley to enquire if she knew she was related to the Middleton family. Pete and Kate share great-grandparents Thomas Temple and Elizabeth Myers and their family is descended from Durham pitmen.

He said: "In a nutshell, Kate's grandmother Dorothy is my mum's cousin, which boils down to me being Kate's second cousin. My mum can remember going down to London for family holidays and playing with her cousin as a child.

"When people look back at their family history, they dream of being related to royalty, someone famous, or just finding something interesting. So I think it's great for my family," he said. "My mother is the last of the Temples in that line and she is over the moon about it. It's also great for my children and it will be fantastic for their children too, because she's going to be the Queen one day."
